Yes! Of course, like with any job there are days when I like it a bit less. But overall being a scientist is incredibly rewarding and stimulating, and as a bonus you get to travel a lot to conferences and have interesting discussions with a lot of different people from all over the world.
I think Laurence really hit the nail on the head with their answer. I like my job more on some days (my computer code works well, I get some good feedback from my supervisor, the pictures that were taken by my telescope look nice) and less on others (I broke my code and can’t fix it, it’s been a while since I’ve gotten any nice results, I’m comparing my work to others and I don’t like mine).
But overall, there are more good days than there are bad and the conference travel is very exciting. Meeting people who are just as excited about your tiny field is such a fun experience.
I also agree with Laurence and Bella! On the good days, I think my job is the best thing in the world. I get to meet so many different people, and feel like I’m making a really significant difference for them. Things can get a bit stressful though. Lots of deadlines for applications for funding (and deadlines for funding running out) can make things a little less enjoyable sometimes. Most days are good though, and I can’t really imagine myself doing anything else right now.
Like the others have said, I also like my job most of the time. Like all things, it’s great when everything is going well, but can be frustrating when it just isn’t going to plan (though sometimes that’s when we get the most interesting results). But we’re human beings too! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t look forward to Friday afternoons.
