Black holes are pretty exotic objects! They form after the death of very massive stars. After a star reaches the end of its life and explodes in what we call a supernova, if the star was massive enough the inner core will undergo gravitational collapse and form an extremely dense object called a black hole. Black holes are objects that are so dense that nothing can escape their gravitational pull – not even light!

Laurence is bang on with this answer, but I’d like to chip in a little bit. I like to think about them like giant space funnels, things can orbit around them, not everything just gets sucked in! at the bottom of the funnel is where the black hole sits and things can orbit around and around the black hole until they fall in!
